“Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favour fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction ice is also great and would suffice.”

“Fire & Ice”
by Robert Frost

DESCRIPTION:

Inspired by Robert Frost’s most well-known poem, we produced an interactive art installation. It provides the viewing public with the unique opportunity to assume the personified role of either ‘fire’ or ‘ice’, rendering them an integral performer within the piece.

Presented in a magnificent landscape format, the two opposing elements react to viewers’ gestures. With increased movement, the ferocity of the fire and the glacial blizzard of the ice become more pronounced, thus triggering an explosive real-time transition of elemental particle simulations.

DETAIL:

Working from the initial design brief to final idea. I looked at a variety of technologies, visited manufactures and researched what display was most practical for the project with colleagues.

I later focused on some of the detailed components, designing all weather, wind and water-resistant external parts. I assisted with the dry run pre-build and testing before final construction and calibration on-site.

The aesthetic remains simple, yet powerful, and the juxtaposition of fluctuating movement creates an artistic and visually compelling reinterpretation of the beloved poem.
