DESCRIPTION:

A geometric intervention of light and form that distorts and explores the historically rich beaux-art façade of the grand palais in Paris. In an evolution of traditional optical illusions, patterns meander between geometric studies and more dramatic visual movements, accompanied throughout by a musical score that is integral to the overall experience.

Both the visual and sonic elements of this installation alter the viewers’ perception of the Grand Palais, thus giving its architecture a new narrative. The public installation was a site-specific commission for the Grand Palais by the Art Paris 2015 organisation.

DETAIL:

Working from architectural drawings of the Grand Palais, we reverse engineered the detailed façade and drew up a simplified canvas to project on to in-house.

Using sheet MDF, the drawings were scaled, CNC, painted, and layered up to create a subtle but realistic depth to work with.

Working with colleagues in animation we projected patterns that create a playful, yet dynamic, tension to the underlying architecture and historical gravitas of the surrounding area. I was then working on-site in Paris assisting with the set-up of the projection and exhibition inside.
