DESCRIPTION:
A kinetic sculptural artwork for Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas cruise ship.
Capturing the fluidity of the ocean, the articulated form oscillates between calm ripples, to more dramatic motion, as if a large wave is undulating through the piece.
Each independently controlled arc is engineered from bronzed carbon fibre and is finished with a Swarovski band of crystals back-lit by animated lighting.
DETAIL:
An ambitious artwork that I was involved in from the beginning. Time was spent agreeing on the correct mechanical process before I mocked up a 1:1 fiberglass section of a working prototype followed by multiple colour samples.
I made the housing for the internal electronics and designed precise jigs to mount all internal parts correctly with absolute precision around the enclosure, ensuring easy access, alignment, locking, and airflow, through methods of vac-forming, laser cut, plaster cast, and 3D printed parts.
Time management was key with multiple machined components but after a dry run in the studio we installed the artwork in situ on time.
I later worked independently observing and tweaking the artwork to its new surroundings whilst it sailed around the Gulf of Oman.
