DESCRIPTION:

A conceptual artwork which challenges the fidelity of the viewers’ objectivity between what text is being displayed and what text is being understood.

The phenomenon of Typoglycemia is employed ‘ability to understand words if the letters between the first and last are ordered incorrectly’ to achieve the desired effect of simultaneous viewers perceiving different word combinations. Each Nixie tube is identical, and inherently limited to display the letters from the word ‘simulated’ with an extra ‘o’ added. When scrambled, they create over 3,300 words – more than any other combination of letters.

The resultant text and phrases displayed are stimulating, amusing and, at times, cheeky. I was asked to look at the concept from the beginning. Research and development incorporated a modular metalwork system internally but clean and polished on the outside.

DETAIL:

I brainstormed through scale models, 1:1 3D printed sections of the metalwork, interaction layouts and orientations through CAD, plotted drawings, and CNC maquettes before looking at final finishes.

All parts were brought together and assembled in the workshop, wired, and then tested for installations.
